Differences in News Translation between Broadcasting and Newspapers: A Case Study of Korean-English Translation

The aim of the study is to look into differences between broadcasting and newspaper news translation in their approaches to rendering the lead of the news report. For this purpose, the study analyzes shifts in English translations of Korean newspaper reports and compares them with the results of a previous study on broadcasting translation. The analysis suggests that while lead reduction is characteristic of broadcasting translation, lead expansion figures more prominently in newspaper translation. The paper gives a detailed account of these differences and offers some tentative explanations about what gives rise to them. It also discusses the differences in terms of the degree of latitude the translator exercises in editing the TT and their implications for different roles played by the translator in the two modes of translation.À la suite de notre recherche qui a pour but d’examiner la traduction des chapeaux pour le journal télévisé, nous nous sommes penché sur la traduction des quotidiens.

Sustainability of growth in the Korean manufacturing sector

This paper examines Krugman’s pessimistic paradigm on East Asian economic growth, using Korean manufacturing data. The initial focus is on a disaggregated growth accounting approach. I found that productivity growth is the largest contributor to output growth in eight of fifteen industries, and that productivity growth explains about 38 per cent of output growth of manufacturing overall. Secondly the theoretical issues, which call into question the theoretical basis of the paradigm, are examined. I found that sequencing of the sources of growth was empirically verified (productivity growth in light industries ’ capital accumulation in heavy and petrochemical industries ’ productivity growth through R&D efforts), and that an increasing or constant output–capital ratio (marginal product of capital) was found in ten of the fifteen industries, and that interactions between productivity growth and capital input growth were found in nine of the fifteen industries. These results give a strong indication that criticism of the sustainability of East Asian growth is open to question

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to summarize and analyze families' experiences of end-of-life care by conducting a systematic review of peer reviewed journals both in Korea and abroad.BackgroundFamilies play an increasingly important role in care and medical treatment, acting as caregivers or decision makers rather than just being passive observers. It is necessary to understand the experiences of family members in order to provide appropriate care for them.MethodsA systematic search of the literature was performed using the Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and the Korea Education & Research Information Service (KERIS) for the period of January 1990 through to December 2006. A total of 35 studies met the inclusion criteria.ResultsSeventeen studies used a quantitative design, while 18 studies used qualitative methods. Quantitative studies reported that the family's quality of life was relatively low when the patient was in need of high medical/nursing services. The perceived burden levels were moderately high, and depression levels were high among family caregivers. Various concepts emerged from the 18 qualitative studies, including psychological issues, physical problems, burdens, needs and interpersonal relationships.ConclusionThis study found that most previous research findings were focused on negative and neutral experiences. A few studies identified positive experiences. Based on the study results, we suggest that nurses need to be more aware of the experiences of patients' families and their potential needs
